ACTA 2016

Writer and actress Meera Syal was honoured with the top award at the inaugural Eastern Eye Arts, Culture and Theatre Awards (ACTAs), which celebrated the achievements of the British Asian community in the arts.

Syal, who has enjoyed a successful career as an author, actress in film, television and on stage, was presented the award for outstanding contribution to the arts at the first ever awards ceremony on Sunday, 22nd May at the Southbank Centre, London. She was among 21 winners on the night when the ACTAs honoured individuals and organisations in categories ranging from theatre to music, literature, the visual arts, film, and television to theatre.

Hosted by the Asian Media and Marketing Group, publishers of Eastern Eye and Garavi Gujarat news weekly, the awards are the first of their kind in Britain.
Art Award
Award given to any individual, curator, exhibition, working through the medium of painting, photography, mixed media or any media that focuses on or is influenced by South Asian traditions.
Dance Award
Award given to a dancer/ choreographer / promoter whose work is concerned with or influenced by South Asian dance traditions
Literature Award
Award given to an author of any heritage and ethnicity for their novel, non-fiction work, poetry or short story, which has at its core South Asian content and influence
Music Award
Award given to an individual, team, group or organisation for their contribution to enriching the musical heritage of the UK through promoting,
